There are actually two different types, at least in the ones I have. There's a silver egg that looks to be thin acrylic with chrome plating. They are quite brittle, in fact quite a few of mine are broken,
The other type is more like polypropylene or polystyrene. Much more flexible. They have all survived from the late 70s and early 80's when I started hoarding them. I think you could cast either one, but the acrylic ones would probably crack. I really would love to see some thin aluminum copies. They would take the heat of lights and would be darn near indestructible. You could make the aluminum bells a little thicker too. As long as the lip on the edge was the same, you wouldn't notice the increased thickness. Maybe one of our members skilled with a metal lathe, might want to give it a go. I don't have a lathe myself. It's on my Dear Santa list though,
