Clawcraft in 1/72nd by REL - DarthDuck - 02-10-2010

Here's the soon to be available (from SSM store) Clawcraft by REL.

A very nicely done kit although my copies are not the ones which will be cast by Blappy for SSM. They are preproduction test shots which I received for my contribution of the guns and wing thrusters on the master by REL. I've had em for a long while now but since the store should soon have them available I'll go ahead and build one up to suit myself.

Sweeet. This will be another good one. I have a question. Did you finish the other ones? The Y & the Tie?

Yeah.... What he saidTongue

RE: Clawcraft in 1/72nd by REL - DarthDuck - 02-12-2010

While browsing Wikipedia I came across a Clawcraft version with an alternate "canopy". Rather than the flat glass of a standard tie it has dome like glass suspended within two different rings with six stringers from the outer ring to the inner ring. So, scrounging up some "stuff" I set about to duplicate it. Just have those six stringers left to go now. This will simplify painting since once glued together it will be a one piece framework with two pieces of "glass" that can be added into the framing after paint.

That's what the alternate canopy reminded me of!Wink

And with the lil "spokes" added:

Naw Jase, no worries, I got it!Wink
Those craft store "rollie eyes" (in the picture) are excellent sources for domes and such. They come in a surprising variety of sizes and this isn't the first time I've taken advantage of them.
But the picture I stumbled upon really did look a lil bit like a big eyeball up front too!Tongue

And don't worry, I never believed all them blokes who said you were a humorless sod!TongueTongueTongue

Eagerly awaiting moreCool

RE: Clawcraft in 1/72nd by REL - JAWS - 02-14-2010

Yes Don looking sharp. So are you going hollow this sucker out also or is this going to be a 'basic' build up?

Straight build on this one Jason. I'm just doing it for fun and to fill a lil hole in my schedule while I've waited for my machinist to become available for the SS TIE.Wink

I wouldn't duck ya buddy though you might fit the bill if I was a wise quacker.Tongue

I'm in the process of paint right now. I'm trying to do something that's hard to describe? You ever seen an octopus or squid and how it's skin can appear "mottled"? Well, I'm going for something like that. If it works I will proudly proclaim that's what is! If it fails I will say it was ,"Inpsired by".TongueAngel

RE: Clawcraft in 1/72nd by REL - DarthDuck - 02-14-2010

Going for a look I found online I attempted to emulate what I would describe as the somewhat mottled effect like a squid or octopus has? First a base of silver followed by "splotchy" areas of various shades of black added to the silver in many layers. Then a topcoat of green and blue ink suspended in clear with a "duo blue/green" pearl additive.

I'll follow this with some detail painting and a panel line wash.
But here it is straight from the booth so far:

Yes, like Octopus skin.

So you think so then?

RE: Clawcraft in 1/72nd by REL - JAWS - 02-15-2010

Yes. Any chance of a photo without the flash?

RE: Clawcraft in 1/72nd by REL - DarthDuck - 02-22-2010

And here it is after the panel line wash (subtle mid grey) and parts added then flat coated on a base-

You need to add some flames to the wings! Tongue Seriously,Don - you did a great job on this. I wonder what other kind of paint schemes can be done to make these look more real world? Don't get me wrong,I like the industrial look of the orginal ILM models of the seventies, and eigthies, but it's nice to see something different every now,and then.

I looked up the craft on Wookiepedia and besides a "standard grey" I found something like this which caught my eye. I have no clue what else might be appropriate but of course anyone who gets the kit can show us their ideas.Wink
