Mensa 1/24 SS X-Wing - Mensaboy - 09-20-2016

so i wanted to build a SS X-wing and LED, maybe swing wings...do it up nice (this is a project to get me back in the game as it were and gear up for finishing the Falcon)

i didn't want to worry about sagging wings so decided to build my own 2 piece wings, cast them and maybe make 2 or 3 sets (red 5, red 3, maybe one for a friend)

i did that, and then for good measure laminated them with carbon fiber (its what all the cool kids use these days)

so they are crazy strong, very happy...until i started looking at the rest of the parts on this kit i bought a few years back (V3), this thing is very poor - all the parts have bubbles, and horribly made, almost every greeblie, plate, panel line, is crooked

so i have begun making my own X-wing  "kit" for all intents and purposes, i have about everything but the fuselage and that should be relatively straight forward; depending on how crazy i decide to get with the carbon fiber Wink

here are some photos of the parts...

Ohh nice! Carbon fibre.....very schmicko! [Image: biggrin.png]  Are you planning to sell kits? Or are you just tidying one up for yourself?

Too kool. Welcome back.

RE: Mensa 1/24 SS X-Wing - Mensaboy - 08-13-2017

have finished most of the fuselage parts, still have to do the panel lines on the top half and add some of the flat chip greeblies, be a little bit before i am ready to cast them, i honestly have no idea how to mold these things, i may need to invest in a larger pressure tank...

Beautiful work, very keen to see how it progresses and casts up. Liking the C/F in the wing cores, I've mentioned this media to a few as its sand able and takes CA very well.

i have about 20 each of the bottom and top cast, many required a bit of cleanup to fill the occasional air pocket but this was always on the inside due to casting them good side down - each part took more than a gallon of silicone...

very nice work!!!

RE: Mensa 1/24 SS X-Wing - Turrican - 09-16-2017

Wow that looks really spot on.

RE: Mensa 1/24 SS X-Wing - Ralphee - 09-16-2017

We go an age without any X wing offerings, and now there taking over the planet......great work....you must be crazy busy casting all those.

I think the odd air bubble can be looked over lol, thats some crazy work load. Look forward to seeing some taking shape in the near future  Smile

RE: Mensa 1/24 SS X-Wing - Mensaboy - 04-27-2024

so i am back on the SS Xwing "kit"

i have had a heck of a time the last many years, i wont go into that here, but i am just now able to work on hobby related things

although i have had no time to work on SS or post here i have been visiting the site regularly and looking at peoples builds and research progress - i lack the gift of words to express fully my thanks to everyone here, but thank you nonetheless

i got really amped to finish my xwing so i could build a replica of the Red leader, because of the amazing photos released from the auction site when it was auctioned off late last year - if anyone is unaware of the photos i do not know the protocol for posting them, they certainly were not strict about showing them when they wanted to get the bids going lol

here is a link to the Greg Jein auction page (i think - if you search greg jein auction it is top result)
https://fineart.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=7278%20&LotNo=89464

also saw a video of someone looking at a pdf of the Japanese book "SW Chronicles: Vehicles" and someone sent that to me - all kinds of mouse problems with that file of course so it is a bit difficult to procure

also it is in Japanese and it was just a raw pile of scans with some duplicates and some missing pages, so of course i have spent about 150 hours totally translating the book to english and cleaning up every page, photoshopping out the Japanese and remastering the whole thing in english...

so here is my official SS X-Wing update

i have not yet got my workshop set up - it is complicated due to the aforementioned stuff i wont go into here, but i am actively working on it and should be able to have a complete X-Wing in 2-3 months

here are some pics, new cannon thing from close up pics from Red One, also now have 7 distinct versions of the engine parts so you could build original Blue leader all the way to Porkins, maybe, i have to do more research with the Chronicles book once i am done with the translating, as i haven't actually looked at the book yet lol

what do you think about the 3d printed part? it would be with a tough resin so it would be about as strong as cast i think

also my Zvezda star destroyer i did last year, about 1200 feet of fiber optic roughly 1600 drilled holes, just to torture myself

Awesome, look forward to another X kit.

RE: Mensa 1/24 SS X-Wing - Mensaboy - 12-19-2025

here are some photos of cast parts and the wing with parts inside
the reason the little valve part on the Sealab compressed air bottle is cast separate is some xwings have them pointed one way, some the other

This is awesome!
Would you mind sharing some pictures of the process of building the fuselage?
I know it was a decade ago, but it's a part of this build that I've never seen in detail.
Thanks!

hey there are photos of the masters in post #4, i have included more here

the top of the fuselage and the nosecone were started with an rough simple 3D print, i made the models in Lightwave 3D and printed them in small parts on a Prusa MK2

the bottom of the fuselage was just scratch built out of plain sheet styrene

all my measurements came from adjusting my original SS xwing (photo with different colors of primer) which was fully scratch built from styrene

i do not have many photos of the initial assembly and filling process

RE: Mensa 1/24 SS X-Wing - Mensaboy - 01-23-2026

here is a still comparing red 5 to 1, the torpedo hole is very different, as well as the panel line in front of the torpedo on the bottom fuselage half making all the panel lines on the bottom slightly different
