Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - JAWS - 11-05-2013 [attachment=15177] Ok so another one of my grail projects, the ANH Blockade Runner, Tantive IV. Originally built as the 'Pirate Ship' then transformed into the 'Blockade Runner'. First seen a the start of Star Wars 'A New Hope' being chased down by the Star Destroyer 'Devestator' & something I think anyone who saw it back in the day never forgot. I will be building the ANH version of this model, starting with the Radar Tower & Turbo Lasers. Just getting some parts together to get things rolling. Then hope to get most of these 2 sub sections completed. This will be a long project. RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - LastBattlestar - 11-05-2013 Man, that's gonna be awesome. You might have to concentrate on one project instead of many if you ever want to make progress. ![]() Any ETA on a new house. Looking at the property slump up there on the Gold Coast, might be a good time to buy! Mike RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - JAWS - 11-05-2013 Hey Mike we are about 6-8 months from buying a house. Always looking, which sucks.... Once we do though I will have enough room for all my builds. So might as well get them started. So I have ![]() First Turret cut & the Radar. RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - JAWS - 11-05-2013 Committed
RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - Wombat - 11-05-2013 This will be very cool!! Even building pieces as you are ready for adding as the build progresses will look good. Especially if they are left in there styrene dress n all.. This is probably enough project's for you now, lets see, G, EP, MF, Gal356, SD, ummmmmmm.... I'm missing something aint I?? ![]() As long as you are enjoying it then really thats all that matters mate! Now get stuck into it!
RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - JAWS - 11-06-2013 The other builds can progress at a later point when I have the shop set up. I probably won't continue the 32" falcon as its not ANH which is what I am concentrated on. So will be replaced by the 5'er. The SD will also get done once I have the room to set it up. The Escape Pod I have decide to rebuild my own base pattern so will be played with. Galactica will also get completed once I have the room to set up again. My initial goal was to get as many base structures to all the builds I hope to have started & finished if possible so I can solely concentrate on detailing. Ok so I already made my first mistake. I cut the Radar too short.... Totally forgot what I was doing. So will cut another tanker this afternoon........ RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - Stefan Hacker - 11-06-2013 Wow this will be an amazing project! Looking forward to see more Jase. RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - JAWS - 11-07-2013 Yeah Stefan this will be awesome. Just hope I don't make too many silly mistakes cutting kit parts.... Like I did with the Tanker part for the Radar. RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - Stefan Hacker - 11-07-2013 (11-07-2013, 06:27 AM)JAWS Wrote: Yeah Stefan this will be awesome. I would have sweaty hands while cutting those pricey parts like the Sealab or are those orange Casts? It´s like playing with someones life. One wrong cut and you get a financial desaster. lol RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - JAWS - 11-25-2013 Have some time to play whilst awaiting materials. Thought Id have a go at the Turret Base dimension. After 3 attempts am very close. Maybe a mm or two either side would be on the money. [attachment=15304][attachment=15303] RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - Stefan Hacker - 11-25-2013 Looks great! Where did the sand colored parts come from? Looks like Challenger parts or something like that. RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - JAWS - 11-25-2013 Thanks. Im no mathematician so this gets rather challenging for me. Looking at acrylic tubing now to see what sizes will be suitable. RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - Wombat - 11-25-2013 I'd be looking at what size is closest to your mock up and then making the disc to fit that diameter. Would think the pipe would increase sizes by an 1/8 at that size? You know you are around the money so once you have the pipe worked out then make the disc to fit that. :-) Good to see ya having some fun there! RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - LastBattlestar - 11-25-2013 Looks good so far Jase. I just love the Sealab parts being used! Have a chat with Lasse Henning regarding tube sizes. I looks like the whole armature is acrylic tube, quite unique. It would be interesting to know how the mo co mounts were fitted. Mike RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - JAWS - 11-25-2013 Yeah found tube that's 100mm OD x 2mm = 96mmID That will give me a couple more mm each side then a 2mm thickness. Looking at the pic the turret housing looks a little thicker? Maybe 2.5 - 3mm? Cheers for the feedback fellas. This is a Grail build, so am enjoying putting it together, finally. Slowly but surely, like the others... It will get finished. But it won't be painted. I want to see the science behind the structure. The detail of the studio models always blew me away. From the first time I watched it, from those first scenes I was trying to figure out how they made these realistically futuristic vehicles. When I discovered it was from off the shelf model kits I was just dumbfounded & hooked straight away. So this is a lot of fun. Yeah would love to see a picture of the armature. Haven't yet.... RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - star-art - 11-25-2013 I seem to remember working out the tube sizes when I had a go at making plans for this some years back. They would not have used metric sizes because those were not available then(at least not in California). They would have been English measurements. RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - JAWS - 11-26-2013 True Charles but I was trying to find something close in Australia. Have been looking at the US sites where I will inevitably buy it from. So whats your take on the tube sizes? RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - Mr. Wabac - 11-26-2013 (11-25-2013, 06:05 PM)LastBattlestar Wrote: It looks like the whole armature is acrylic tube, quite unique You know, I have seen photos of the ship under construction and it does appear to be all acrylic - I guess that never really sunk into my head until now. Having seen the real thing a couple times at exhibits, and having worked on a SS Galactica for many years I now have much more of an appreciation for the size (and weight) of the miniatures. Would be amazed that acrylic alone could support all of that structure. RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - JAWS - 11-26-2013 There must be an internal armature, just haven't seen any pictures of it... Yeah she's all acrylics. RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - LastBattlestar - 11-26-2013 That tube looks like pretty thick walled stuff, so I don't think the original would have had any metal armature inside. They must have used some sort of plug to slot the mount into. I have no idea how many mounting points it had bit it would only have been one of four possible ones at the centre junction. I think you'll be fine with just the acrylic. I hope. ![]() Mike RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - Tsophika - 11-26-2013 The metal armature runs the entire length of the body. It can be mounted from either side, the bottom and the rear between the engines. RE: Building the ANH Blockade Runner - Tantive IV - JAWS - 05-12-2014 Whilst I was at the plastics supplier I grabbed this. Goanna see how close it is so I can have a little play finishing the Gun & Radar patterns. |
