I don't know which "scale" but small A-wing LOL - 3d-builder - 11-17-2009 I have most of this on the RI so I will post a link to it, and continue the present build here. http://resinilluminati.com/showthread.php?t=8152 The latest is here Ah.... After cutting the f-16 like intakes out on the bandsaw I needed a way of cutting them in half. I could have used the band saw but didn't want to loose the thickness of the blade on the pattern. So I used this "Real" thin saw I had from Micro-mark, to keep the saw cutting at 90deg I used two 123 blocks to guide it. ![]() ![]() Next up some vector rings, that go at the rear of the engines just some PVC cut and filled with some 2 part modeling clay. ![]() For scale the ring on the left is a SS size vector ring!! ![]() ![]() ext I just took the remaining clay I had and started to fill in the cross sections.Every thing in this pic is pretty lumpy but will get sanded! ![]() This pic shows some sanded parts canopy, canopy bulkhead, 1 engine set, vector rings, rear intakes. ![]() Thats about where i am at for the moment! RE: I don't know which "scale" but small A-wing LOL - scratchy - 11-25-2009 Wow, I've always wanted to try the A-Wing, but never really knew how to start it. Looking Good! Well if this thread helps go ahead and try!!:
RE: I don't know which "scale" but small A-wing LOL - JAWS - 11-30-2009 Well with your current abillities scratchy I don't think your going to have too much trouble with anything you would like to build Michael watching you make this has also given me a fantastic insight to the process needed to form shapes. Its truly humbling to guys like yourself & scratchy that make stuff from nothing show how you get there. Thanks guys. Im going to give it a go sometime Nice work on the AWing Iding at the RPF too Michael. You guys are killin it.
RE: I don't know which "scale" but small A-wing LOL - 3d-builder - 01-27-2010 (11-30-2009, 06:42 AM)jasonwright.1972 Wrote: Well with your current abillities scratchy I don't think your going to have too much trouble with anything you would like to build Thanks Jay! Here is a picture with most of the patterns filled with clay! ![]() The hull up on the platen ready for forming. ![]() Formed got some webbing away from the pattern...got lucky probavly heated a few minutes long but the pull was still very good! ![]() This former was a bit to small for all those parts but I salvaged most of them!! ![]() ![]() ![]() The pattern's bottom profile is built up on a piece of 3mm styrene, this protects the clay when you cut away the flash. But after removing the riser and cutting away the flash it creates, I still have to take away the 3mm. So cut some masking tape 3mm wide and lay it down around the part. Mark with pencil and sand.... ![]() ![]() ![]() Then it's time to find the center on both top and bottom hulls, and mark other ares that need to be cut away. ![]() ![]() Then it's mr dremel too;s time. ![]() A little rough but hand sanding for the rest. ![]() The seams are nice and tight, so time to mark out the missile launch tubes. ![]() Small dremel tool bit to the rescue and a steady hand! ![]() Finished repeat for the other side. ![]() Now mark out the center insert and cut it away. ![]() Dremel away again. ![]() Then clean it up, repeat for lower hull. ![]() Small mock up on top hull against SS A-wing for scale. ![]() Same thing here cut away the gun well openings on each side. ![]() I used some evergreen channel strips on the inside of the missile launch tubes, looked and fit great! http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20small%20scale/100_1972.jpg In these to pics you can see the the inner bulkheads on each side, they really firm things up. Also the channel strip behind them. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20small%20scale/100_1972.jpg ![]() You have seen in prior pics the canopy bulkhead already in place. Just find and mark the center so it can be fitted correctly. The back has to be cut away and then recessed with a fresh piece of plastic. ![]() ![]() Make a template for the center cut out. ![]() ![]() This model is 2x bigger than the small snap kit offered in the 80's in the pic the center insert is checked against the small kit. The width was exactly 2x's bigger. ![]() ![]() Again you have seen this part the canopy/nose and rail it is created by dremeling out the un-needed plastic, This area is drawn on the plastic part before cutting.
RE: I don't know which "scale" but small A-wing LOL - 3d-builder - 01-27-2010 Center section mocked in only with panel lines on it and most of the other areas. The center sections panel lines were scribed before it was fitted. ![]() center section panel lines scribed. scribing side pales on a curve? try some evergreen strip and tape it down. ![]() All panels finished. ![]() ![]()
RE: I don't know which "scale" but small A-wing LOL - JAWS - 01-27-2010 That is just freakn sick man! Thanks for the whopper update. It was worth the wait! RE: I don't know which "scale" but small A-wing LOL - 3d-builder - 01-28-2010 No worries glad you liked it! Just want to get this up to speed so I can check out the rest of the site here. Ok on to the rear where the inner bulkhead lives, I put in some strip to locate the depth of the bulkhead. ![]() Here is the bulkhead with two right triangles attached to make sure it sits up at 90 deg. ![]() Fitter up against the strips I mentioned earlier. ![]() To this same assembly I added the gun well bulkheads, on the sides and backed them up with right triangles as well because they need to be drilled out for the cannons later. ![]() Ok all in place! ![]() Time to dremel out the opening for the cockpit tub. ![]() ![]() After that is done I place a peice of styrene underneath to capture the shape of the opening, the objective is to make a plug for forming for the tub. ![]() ![]() From there I just build up on the plastic with some pine 22mm high. ![]() And here it is the formed tub. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is the bottom hulll cut away just like the top, except there is a ramp down there, that will have to be made later. ![]() center section mocked in with some panel lines drawn but not all. ![]() Now some detailing in the tub. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Still more detailing needed in the tub, need to make controls and seat. A few mocked up pics with stabilizers, and the rear F-16 like intakes I made out of poplar and then hollowed, going to have these cast for me. ![]() ![]()
RE: I don't know which "scale" but small A-wing LOL - 9 line - 01-30-2010 Michael, thats looking great, your the vacuum forming king. RE: I don't know which "scale" but small A-wing LOL - JAWS - 03-22-2010 Hey Michael love that kit parts box you have there. Any updates on the A? Is it right you were making this as a patern for a kit? RE: I don't know which "scale" but small A-wing LOL - 427 Cobra - 03-22-2010 I was just admiring the balsa parts on this build. I never knew that it could look so good, and be so useful! I'm also wondering the same thing Jase is - are there any updates on this? RE: I don't know which "scale" but small A-wing LOL - 3d-builder - 09-16-2011 Hey Guys I started this over......have some pics but tons of video http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/Small%20A%20Wing%20Scratch%20build/100_1618.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/Small%20A%20Wing%20Scratch%20build/100_3322.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/Small%20A%20Wing%20Scratch%20build/100_3342.jpg Most of the patterns I don't have pics as far as building.....but I do have some for the engines....... http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/Small%20A%20Wing%20Scratch%20build/100_3458.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/Small%20A%20Wing%20Scratch%20build/100_3459.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/Small%20A%20Wing%20Scratch%20build/100_3460.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/Small%20A%20Wing%20Scratch%20build/100_3461.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/Small%20A%20Wing%20Scratch%20build/100_3462.jpg I made a center keel and then filled the engine halves with clay. I dont think I took pics of the engines while putting in the clay? Videos from here on out for the most part.........of vacuum forming parts. Hope I can get these in order i have a bunch. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-18122804-1.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-18123712.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-19123320.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-19113318.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-19110452.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-19103542.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-19101442.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-19095056.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-19130328.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-21111208.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-21111026.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-21111844.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-21111844.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-21114814.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-21121938.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-21122810.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-21123038.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-21130016.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-24144712.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-24153956.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-24195536.mp4 http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a40/3dimensionalmanagement/A-wing%20videos/clip-2011-05-26132744.mp4 If you can make sense of this god bless you! LOL I can make main parts available that you see in the videos after I know it's going to work.....as you can see it would be for advanced builders with a bit of scratch building experience.
