RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 09-18-2010 The start of the garbage chute. I glued two pieces of .060 styrene together, just so that there's some strength and the piece fits snuggly in the neck of the tower ![]() The floor and two pieces angled onto the walls ![]() A nice fit, just placed inside ![]() I made two detail pieces of the 20mm Flak carriage, one for the front of the neck, which has more details, and the other will be glued in the back of the garbage chute. ![]() Here's the piece glued to the front ![]() I need some help with an I.D. Does anyone know where this kitpart came from that is used for the ceiling of the chute, I don't have any good reference pics of the details.
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - Cylon-Knight - 09-19-2010 Wow - your build is AMAZING! Great work. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 09-19-2010 Wow Jay that is freakn awsome!!!!! I love your work man is fantastic. Thats also a nice picture of the back neck mate. Got anymore good ref you could share with the site? RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - 427 Cobra - 09-20-2010 I don't think they have such small kits for the one that you're building in this tiny scale. I can't see that very well, but it looks like the same part on top, and bottom. Maybe these are tank fenders? ~ Cobra Chris

However, since no kits are made this small then I just need to look at the actual part to recreate a downsized version of it for my build. Monsieur Tox came through for me and "opened my eyes" to the part that was used for this area..... the armor shields from the Mobelwagen!
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - 427 Cobra - 09-20-2010 I figured as much. I just wondered where you were going to get something so small inside that trash chute. You're doing an amazing job on this, I'm not going to rain on your parade - just keep going. I have problems of my own to sort out right now. As long as you stay on this, I'll try to stay on my X-wing build. Maybe this will take my mind off the sale of my grandmothers' house. I need your strength, Scratchy - it's one of the few things that keeps ME going is the work I see on this site. ~ Cobra Chris
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 09-22-2010 Here's the three individual pieces of the garbage chute, I looked at the scene in ESB to see if this chute was lighted, it wasn't. However, I'm going to go ahead and light it anyway ![]() The three pieces assembled prior to paint and glue.... ![]() ....painted, glued and a test light
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 09-22-2010 Killer Jay just frakn killer work mate. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 09-23-2010 Thanks Jason. I can now detail the top and back of the Neck/Spine. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - kbilly - 09-23-2010 Scatchy that Flak piece looks awesome mate, as does the whole build so far. That flak piece is one of the more recognisable parts on the destroyer, so you've really made the whole thing look the way it's supposed to. Can't believe how small that piece is!! RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 09-24-2010 Thanks Kbilly! I agree, that part really does stand out in the front. There's so many parts that I'm looking forward to build as I look at all the details on the reference pics that I'm using. Time consuming, but well worth it in the end. Thank you everybody RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 09-29-2010 Some work on the flanges that's on the spine. I tried to find some "T" plastic strip from Plastruct and Evergreen that would fit this area, but neither companies make anything small enough. I purchased some Plastruct ABS TEE 90081 for the edges of the spine though and it looks to be a good fit. For the flanges, I cut some .010" styrene into 3mm strips, scribed, and glued pieces to the spine. ![]() I used some .010X.020 strips from Evergreen, cut four seperate pieces and glued them to the 3mm pieces ![]() I continued the same technique for the back end ![]() ![]() I'm really looking forward to detailing this area, and the front where I glued the Flak carriage to the neck RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 09-29-2010 Thanks for the update Jay. Looking good my friend. My son says "AWSOME!!!". RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - 427 Cobra - 09-30-2010 Are all those parts scratch made? If so - this is truly rocking! I wish I had more enthusiasm for having hot acrylic flying everywhere - mostly all over my clothes, and my body. I could have a blast then, as this is what I have most of to do to get my kit to where yours is. It isn't a lack of patience - just get tiny burns all over my arms, and face. Are you using all styrene for this Star destroyer? ~ Cobra Chris

I wish I had more enthusiasm for having hot acrylic flying everywhere - mostly all over my clothes, and my body. hi Chris, yes every white piece is a piece of styrene that was cut from the sheet, strips or tube, I also have a little bit of grey styrene in there as well. The other little bits, that aren't white, where pieces taken from some 1/700 battleships (very few pieces) these are pieces that where molded into the main deck and shaved off for this build. However, I'll try and find something that looks like the piece that is on the studio model. Since I'm building this, I thought why not build the part that goes in that specific place. I wasn't as focused with my first attempt back in the early 90's. I suppose I should've called this thread "Scratchbuilt Kitparts" and I'm just glueing them to something that looks like a star destroyer LOL. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 10-08-2010 Hello all, just a quick note, I'll have some of my WIP builds at this weekends IPMS show in Vancouver. I'll have the Star Destroyer, three scratched 1/72 AT-STs and my lighted 1/2256 Nebulon B on display. For more details; http://www.ipmsvancouver.ca/ RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 11-06-2010 It's been awhile, here's some pics on the progress of the back of the "Neck". Still have some more detail to throw on it, hope you like. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - 427 Cobra - 11-07-2010 That's phenomenal for something so small! Christ, Scratchy - I don't see how you can stand to make something that's so tiny you almost need a microscope to see it! I hate making parts for my four foot beast, and it's HUGE! Maybe the reason is because any mistakes I make are just as big as the parts themselves, and the correction is just as big. I love the ribbing. I was going to suggest 0.10" styrene rod laid side by side for the ribs to make it a little easier. You could glue them all lengthwise with a 0.10" thick styrene sheet in between to separate them until they're placed. This would make them perfectly even without small twists, or uneveness. Of course, you'd have to cut each section to the width of the neck once dry. Use this method on your next build, or just for practice. It works really well for me! ![]() ~ Cobra Chris

CC, that's a good suggestion..... wish I would've thought of it at the time though. There's still some areas on this build that I haven't started yet, if you, or anyone else have any ideas, feel free to mention them, I welcome all constructive feedback.... as long as it's on an area that isn't finished or partially started, I don't like going back into my work

RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 12-19-2010 Well you'd definately have to be to scratch build what you have. Its awsome to see how people create models from bits of plastic & scraps. Very talented. Thanks Jase ![]() I added a little more detailing since the last post, the sides are going by a little bit faster than the rest of the areas on the command tower and neck. Nothing like cutting up some larger pieces and gluing them on, as opposed to making little intricate pieces. ![]() ![]()

RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 01-09-2011 Whenever I make some really delicate parts, I usually glue them to a small sheet of glass. In this first pic, I'm turning some stretched sprue on my dremel, just sanding down the piece to give me a diffinate edge. I ran out of small guns on some old kits, so I had to scratch some up. In the following images, you'll see how I go about building some detail pieces. I also made a couple more for the starboard side. After the parts are dry, I just take a razor blade and "slice" the piece off the glass. ![]() Here's the starboard side with the parts I made and some more parts. ![]()
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 01-11-2011 The lighter really put this build into perspective Jay. Now I know your insane & I love it. Keep up the good work matey. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - MonsieurTox - 01-12-2011 I love your work Jay ! (and the subject :p) RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 01-12-2011 Thanks Jase and Julien! I finished the starboard side, I may have to go back into some areas and do a little clean up, next I'll do the small front piece of the neck.....
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 01-18-2011 The front piece went by fast. I had to rebuild the Flak carriage that was glued to the front of the neck. The new one is better. I still have to add four pieces of bent plastic rod, but I can't do that until the area that's just in front is detailed. You won't be able to see these pieces in any of the images on the internet, but they are visible in Sculpting a Galaxy, they more than likely broke off over the years. With the tower and the neck completed, I'll start on the superstructure, the top should be a nice break.
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 02-10-2011 I scratched up some detail pieces, the tank treads in the center at the tower neck, the Flak 38 pieces are next to them. I also made some detail pieces for the front, a piece from the Duster, a couple more from the flak 38, and the nine armour plates. I'll pencil in the panel lines once the basecoat gets sprayed on.
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - dbhs - 02-10-2011 It continues to amaze me. Thanks for the updates. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - MonsieurTox - 02-20-2011 I love the first pic ! You're moving faster than I do. lol Good job J ! RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 02-20-2011 Thanks MonsieurTox. The kitpart details are time consuming, but once those are done, it's just cutting up chips and glueing them on. The top was easy, very few kit parts to replicate. The next deck down, looks like a few kitparts was used, so I'll probally be bogged down in that section. Of course, mapping the areas prior to cutting styrene is also a job in itself.
