RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 01-04-2010

Well, this guy is wrapped up for the time being. I want to be able to do a custom color on this which means I'll be needing an airbrush. So for now this will be going on the shelf. In the mean time I have several other builds to keep my interest up.

In general I'm pretty happy with the detail work I did on the top. None of the bits I replaced on top jump out as being out of place now that the primer is on.

Here's the whole thing with the updated damaged wing attached.

Nice Doug. That battle damage looks sweet . Goodnight Cylon Raider...

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 01-04-2010

Sweet mate!!

Excellent stuff there,i don't know what i like more, damaged or undamaged, they both are looking great!Thats some real nice detailing though with the damaged wing,i really like how those beams are looking like that and the whole effect looks really damn good. This is really gonna look fantastic when all painted up mate!
I think you need to be finding an AB,PFS my friend!!Wink

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 01-05-2010

That looks so COOL!!! And i just love the battle damage wing!!

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 01-05-2010

Thanks, guys.

Phil, what brand/model of airbrush do you have? What do you like/don't like about it?

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-06-2011

This thing's been on hold for far too long. It's back on the bench for painting now.

More pics soon.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Cylon-Knight - 02-06-2011

I LOVE THIS BUILD! WOOOOOOo
Can't wait to see it continue.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-06-2011

Thanks. I got a light coat of grey primer on to help cover up that green self-etching primer. Will update with pics tomorrow. the details really pop in the lighter color.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 02-07-2011

COOL!!!! Keep up the great work !!

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-07-2011

Pics.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 02-07-2011

Looking GOOD !!! The detail really shows up with the light gray color.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-10-2011

Thanks guys. I got the dark gray color for the wings stripes sprayed on. I decided it would be easier to mask over the dark gray than to mask around it and paint it second. Hopefully I'll get some progress pics up tonight of that first step. After the real body color goes on it will start to take shape.

For the weathering I'm going to try to duplicate the weathering on one of the studio models that I have a bunch of reference for. It's the one with the blue background - photos from the Cloudster site. Anyway that's the one I used for adjusting the panel lines and some of the minor details and I want to continue to use that as a guide for weathering.

FYI, those pics were color adjusted to be more gray and not so orange by Red Eye over at BYC.net (the cylon forum). Check here: http://www.byyourcommand.net/cylonforum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=509&start=15

Ok - pics attached.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 02-12-2011

As always looking GOOD!!!

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-12-2011

Thanks, Mark. Its fun to get back on this one. I did the masking for the wing stripes on the bottom side last night but the top side isn't done. I was having trouble getting the outerside of the curve to look right. I couldn't quite figure out why it didn't look right but something was off. I pulled that masking off and will have a fresh start on that part tonight. I'm hoping to get the body color on tonight if I can get that masking down right.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 02-13-2011

I know what you mean that wing stripe is kinda tough.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - JAWS - 02-13-2011

Man I love these ships. They really look tough & menacing. Looking good Doug.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-14-2011

Thanks guys. Yeah, this Raider is menacing and so cool. I think it's still my all time favorite ship.

Here's the final color painted on.
I got the canopy masked up for painting but will wait to let that body color cure another day. will get that on tomorrow and then start the detail painting. So nice to see this one getting done now after a year gathering dust.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 02-15-2011

Thats looking GREAT!!!!

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-16-2011

Thanks -

Well, the wing stripes aren't doing it for me and will be re-done. Just another day in the model shop......

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-16-2011

The upper wing stripes didn't come out quite as I had hoped so i masked them again and repainted them tonight. Luckily none of this marred the adjacent paint. The slight asymetry of the stripes is intentional to match the finish on the studio Raider I'm duplicating.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - JAWS - 02-17-2011

Looking good Doug. Whats that grey color?

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-17-2011

This is my own interpretation of course but I like it.
The body color is: (all enamels)
10 parts Modelmaster Lt. Sea Gray
6 parts Modelmaster Flat White
3 parts Floquil Concrete

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - darkimmitator - 02-18-2011

Very cool ship . One of my favs. I like your color choice ,and that battle damaged wing is killer ! Another winner for sure Doug , nice job sir !!!!

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-18-2011

Thanks Kenny!

Ok, now we're getting to the really fun shit. (been waiting to get to this point)

Tucked away in an obscure drawer at work I found a stash of vintage Chartpak graphic tape exactly like the stuff used to do the Cylon insignias on the studio Raiders. As luck would have it the glue on the tape was petrified and useless but I was able to find some new Chartpak tape in nearly the same color. I saved a sample of the old stuff for reference and the new tape is just a slightly darker shade of green. The decals that came with the kit are almost an exact match for the vintage tape, BTW. Props to the kit makers !!

I decided to go ahead with using the new tape for the insignias to get it just a little closer to replicating the original studio model. The insignia is on there slightly crooked intentionally. I scaled the images of the original in AutoCAD and made a template to get the size and placement as accurate as I could. It took a while to get this one on in just the right place. Will do the other side tomorrow night.

Thanks for looking.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - JAWS - 02-18-2011

Interesting Doug & looks sweet. Can't imagine how good its going to look once your done with it.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-19-2011

Thanks. I wasn't sure how this was going to look either. Not sure if I really like it as a finish detail if this was purely a display piece or trying to dupliate the ship in miniature. But here, I'm going for studio model accuracy as much as possible and not how I would do it for a display piece. It is what it is.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-23-2011

Insignias done on both sides.

Masking for the ghosted-in insignia on the main hull.

The graphic tape is stiff enough to not want to stick where the surface is curved up so I painted the insignia on the damaged wing.

Here's an update with the medium gray details painted in.

And with the damaged wing attached.

I love the scowled expression on this thing.

And with the soda can for scale.

I like the see-through effect on the damaged wing.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 02-24-2011

WOW!!!!! That looks GREAT!!!!

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 02-24-2011

Thanks, Mark. I'm looking forward to weathering next. Each step now makes it look completely different.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 03-05-2011

Just a little weathering going on so far. Getting it dirty feels so good.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - JAWS - 03-06-2011

Niiice. Looking good Dougy. Such a beautiful model.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 03-07-2011

I agree looking GOOD!!

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 03-08-2011

Thanks guys !!

My motivation ran out over the weekend and I didn't want to force myself and screw up the weathering. It was bad timing too since the real 'weather' sucked and was stuck inside most of the weekend. Hopefully i'll get back on it later this week.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 03-30-2011

Hey guys.....

My availble time and motivation has kept me from this for a while but getting bits done here and there. I got the second pass of weathering finished now. I'm really liking the overall look of this now and need to touch up some details here and there with a 3rd pass.

Thanks for the comments and thanks for looking.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Cylon-Knight - 03-31-2011

I see that some of the light gray accents are not perfectly symmetrical from starboard to port sides... even though the ship itself is.
Is that SS accurate? Or is it just a dash of variety you've added? Or are you just not done with adding them?

The ship is AMAZING. When you are done, I think it will equal or even be better than the originals. Thanks for sharing the pics!

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 03-31-2011

Thanks !!
The little asymetries are to duplicate the studio model as closely as possible.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - JAWS - 04-09-2011

looking goood Doug! Keep it coming

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 04-11-2011

Thanks, Jase. Real life stuff has kept me away from the bench and I have just a little time to get on line once in a while to check in on the boards. maybe a small update after this weekend if I can get an hour or 2 in the shop later today.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 04-12-2011

Here it is with the last bit of the dark weathering and the dusting applied without clear coat. The dusting effect really pulls all the colors together. It's got the aged look that I was after and is starting to look like it had gotten used and abused as a filming model.

I'm pretty happy with it at this point.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 04-13-2011

Thats really coming along nicely there and even though you are not finished with it,that second to last picture is just kick arse to me.Looks really good to my eye and from what i can remember is how it should be looking. You seem to be on the right track with it all for sure!!

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 04-14-2011

Thanks, buddy. Yeah, I'm really happy with how it's turning out. I got the engine fins in and the masking off of the engines and the front lights now. I still need to get the bars on the canopy painted and weathered. I haven't even started them yet so it will take a while to get them caught up. Luckily I have a bit of the paint left in a jar. I hope it hasn't dried up ??!?!?!?

Looking at these pics again it seem so green and yellow. In person it's a bit more grey like in that second to last photo. I'd like to get it done for some better pics by this weekend but wil have to get those canopy bars started tonight to make that happen. Gotta get busy.

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 04-14-2011

Ah,looking forward to seeing this one done,it's looking very peachie indeed!
I think we both understand how hard it is to get the pictures showing what our own eyes can see.I guess sometimes for the worse but then perhaps sometimes for the betta also in my case. LOL Anyway,i do like the look of it in that particular picture that i mentioned before, the canopy bars will just set this thing off!!

So yes,you betta pull ya finger out and get cracking there!! LOL

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 04-15-2011

got em cut and primered last night Big Grin

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 04-19-2011

I started taking some finished pics. I need to get the lights going to do more and will use a tripod and play with the camera settings in the next round of photos. Using a Canon T2i for these instead of the Sony POS version2 that I was using before. This plus the halogen lights get the color in these photos pretty accurate as far as I can see. Will post more when I have time.

Then when you can crank something like that out,why the Frak wouldn't ya?Nice bit of work there, the Raider looks very much the part!Cool

RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 04-24-2011

Thanks. This one was a lot easier that the last bunch. Guess I remembered some of the commands after all. I got a few other good photos today that will look good with a star field in the background.
