I got a lot more done this weekend. Almost finished. Mostly need to finish the caps for the mounting hole plugs and a couple of other minor greeblies. Of course the weather sucks now so not sure when I'll get it outside to primer it up.

One of the final stages now prepping the mounting covers. I want to use magnets to hold the plugs in place but for some reason the nuts that are welded to the armature are some alloy that the magnets won't stick to. I made some thin steel rings that will hold the magnets and glued them onto the nuts. Next is finishing up the plug hatch covers.

Well, I finally got this beast primered. No pictures.....it looks kind of dreary with the dark green primer. After this cures for a week or so I'll do the base coat. Getting closer.....

Not sure. I just went with what was in the kit. This kit was very complete and need almost no modification.

Back at it again. The rear module has the washes done. Still needs to have the pastel work done. The center module is in progress with the washes.

I'm holding off on mine because I'm terrified of the decals! Phil says to spray the area with gloss first, what did you do?

Really good to see something happening with this again Doug. The weathering is meant to be the fun stage with it and is as long as you don't get too anal with the reference thing. Looks damn grubby already though just from the washes and the pastels will do a great join of blending it all in.

Hope you can keep at it now and get it finished soon. Cool

Are you doing one at a time or a bit on each as you go?

Yes, definitely hit it with gloss before putting the decals on. The decals will go on easier on a glossy surface. They'll be able to slide around easier so less likely to rip as you position them. They also adhere better on glossy surfaces and don't silver so much.

I also combat 'murphy's law' by buying a second set of decals. If you have it you won't need it. If you don't you will.

I spray the entire model with gloss coat before and after putting the decals on. I like the gloss surface for doing the washes. They tend to spread better and are easier to fix if needed. I use the Krylon "Crystal Clear" which is acrylic and non yellowing.

Thanks Phil and Kenny. I'm trying to find the ballance between anality and creativity. I'm working on each side by side for each section. It's the only way I can be consistent between the two. I should take a picture of them side by side for comparison.

A balance between the two as you are doing will make it that much more enjoyable for you and without bogging things down too much in the process. It's the best approach in a lot of cases. Wink

Yeah post up a picture of the pair of them and where they both are at. It's probably the best way of going about it one just for consistency between them as you said and the other just to save you from going through the whole process again if you did do one before the other. That way its sorta fresh for the entire process rather than needing to go through it all again.

Here's a pic of the engine modules side by side. This was a difficult model to do two of at the same time. I definitely got burned out on it at times. I still haven't started the cargo containers yet.

Thanks guys. They look a little streaky now but the pastel work will smooth it out a bit. Mike, I'm not sure what kits the those parts are from. They came with the kit. I know the little teeth parts were too big as cast directly from the kit part. I trimmed them down a little to have them look like the ones on the studio model.

Yours is done already.... Or did you scratch those parts? Yes, planning on doing all the washes first and then pastels. I was thinking about starting with the front module but the weathering on it is the most complicated of the three sections. The rear and center have mostly just gray washes and pastels with a little brown here and there. The front has lots of different colors overlapping.

Have to agree but the front module is also the best looking one in my book afterwards. Still not sure how i managed to make that module look sort of like the original. My other modules look pretty crap in comparison.

As for them parts. The one's on the outside i used castings the same as what came in your kit. For the tiny ones that go around the tapered ring on the inside i used something from a kit that wasn't even available at the time but to me looked perhaps like how i was seeing things just the same. Would really like to see the pictures like we have seen of some of the other miniatures. They would have been taken, no question about it. We just haven't seen em unfortunately but they must be out there somewhere you'd think..

Thanks guys. This thing is a marathon of weathering. Be prepared for this one to take a while when you start it. I may be retired before i finish it. I haven't even started the cargo pods yet.
