RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - Richard_2001 - 02-13-2011 Jason, Yep I am still here! Been pretty quiet lately working behind the scenes on a few major projects not model related, mostly boring stuff like house remodel, but I got my super-computer up and running so now I can continue on the 3d models a lot better than before it will take a lot to bog down this machine! ![]() Fire away with any questions I and will be happy to answer them to the best of my ability! Richard RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - LastBattlestar - 02-14-2011 Damn Jase, the workshop, sorry, MODEL shop looks fantastic! I dream of these things..... ![]() Mike RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 03-07-2011 Thanks Mike. So bout time got back to building this Battlestar. Seems to be alot of Cylon work in progress. So after much trial & error I have developed a way to size up photos to actual model size. This has obviously been used before but is something I just figured out myself to help get measurements, sizing, parts placement as close as possible. So I have succeeded in sizing up some Pappas photos to the actual studio model size ![]() It is just a massive help & a huge relief. This lifts weight off the ol shoulders cause now I can proceed with confidence. Galactica Body scaled up with kit parts for varification. [attachment=7392] [attachment=7393] My raised body panels for sizing, Got pretty close ![]() [attachment=7394] Panels with upper panels removed to show clearly where I need to adjust to scale. Shouldn't be too much of a problem & am confident I can get it done right now. [attachment=7395] I have done the same to the neck & will cut all my sections from 3mm styrene from here in. Its just much easier to work with. [attachment=7397] Plenty of misses before getting the pictures sized up..... [attachment=7396] I also had a practice bevelling the edges of some scrap acrylic with the sander grinder, linnishing machine my wife bought me for Christmas. First time used. [attachment=7398] Not too bad. Maybe a little more practice before i dive into it. [attachment=7399] [attachment=7400] Thanks for looking & welcome back
RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - star-art - 03-08-2011 Perspective distortion can cause problems with this method. Photos often "lie" much more than you would expect. What I ended up doing was using known measurements to create a 3D model that was as correct as I could make it. Then, I used the 3D model to produce a template. This template was a known "true-size" view of any given panel. I then went into Photoshop and re-sized/stretched the photo until it matched the true outline of the panel. This way, I knew the image was not distorted. When I laid the parts on it, I got a nearly perfect fit. Hope that helps. . . RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - dbhs - 03-08-2011 Nice Jase..... The grinder/sander is cool. I've been wanting to get a disc sander for a while. Really beats a dremel for sanding straight lines. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - darkimmitator - 03-08-2011 Glad to see you back on this project again Jase . Maybe this will help inspire me to get back at my build .Lookin forward to more updates man ,keep em coming !!!! RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-04-2011 So I had decided to move forward & get about having the entire ship built up before more detailing. I am happy with the body so thought it best to get the neck & then the head completed. Using a new technique of sizing up photos(not new just new to me) I discovered that the neck on the studio model is 'asymetrical' meaning crooked, uneven, warped or whatever it is other than being 'symetrically' even ![]() Now this is something very common on this studio model & seriously does my & other builders heads in figureing out whether to correct the distortions ![]() I ran this by Charles & he said that correcting it(which was done for the CR build) makes parts placement difficult to get right....... You can see from my picture how different the two sides are! What to do ![]() ![]()
RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - star-art - 04-04-2011 Honestly -- and I know this area in particular from experience -- it's easier overall to build it crooked. It can actually be harder to build an underlying structure that's out of whack on purpose -- but then it's far easier to detail it to match the original. Fixing this sort of thing creates a Domino effect. I had some issues with the neck on the CR version because I was required to make it symmetrical. I had to shift everything around so it all still at least appeared to fit correctly. Now, I was very happy with the final results and it would be very hard to spot any differences. But, with that said, it still would have been a lot easier to just trace off the photo and do it the same way they did it -- warts and all. Watch out as there are some significant consequences to the asymmetries here. IIRC, the "notch" or degree of cut at the back of the neck is much deeper on one side than the other. Stuff like this causes major issues when it comes time to glue on the parts. I had to even out these differences, meaning neither side was a perfect fit. But, to get a perfect fit, each side would have to be different! Hope that helps. . . RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - LastBattlestar - 04-04-2011 I dunno, but you guys are making me feel a hell of a lot better about my build. Assymetry: I prefer to call it 'character'.... ![]() Mike RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-04-2011 Well I really just wanted to make sure I was on the right track. Its not going to be a clone of the BG so am not going to get too anal over these issues as I have in the past. At the end of the day it should look the part as me ol mate Wombat would say. Well hopefully anyway. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - Wombat - 04-05-2011 And look the part it very much will do!! ![]() Very interesting on the neck and the issue's it raises making it symetrical. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - darkimmitator - 04-06-2011 What ever you decide Jase , I am very confident that you will make it work !!!! RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-07-2011 Thanks Kenny. I really appreciate that thought. I was actually at a point where I thought otherwise. So with that I went ahead & cut the neck plates. Studio accurate asymetrical ![]() Who am I to change the masters work.... So second pic is picture 888 8 is my lucky number so lets hope hats a good omen
RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-19-2011 Back at it again. Have built my neck with asymitrecal correctness. Sized up some pictures of the neck walls to check my dimensions & then cross reffed with Charles plans. Im pretty confident Im within 1-2 of the studio model. Cut out a 'rough' island piece & noticed the 2 point pieces up in the top right corner are the two wedges cut from the main island. Interesting. Anyway getting there slowly. I plan to have the neck & arms completed in the nexts couple of days so I can then start on the head
RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - darkimmitator - 04-19-2011 Ahhhhh I knew you would come through with some build progress Jase ! awesome start on the neck section ,and interesting observation about the cut outs from the island section . tis is just the inspiration this build thread needs and us battlestar builders need ! Thanks man , and keep the updates comin . i am right behind you with some updates ,and if we can get the ol wombat arse movin with updates we can get this build section rockin and rollin again !!!! Come on phil baby ,you know you wanna !!!!!! RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-19-2011 Ahh mate thanks. It was actually your post at the top of the page that snapped me back into gear ![]() I appreciate it. With my new skills of sizing up sections from photos I have confidence to go with it which was holding me up before. I also have the paterns to scribe this area from the pictures. I will send them to you Kenny once I clean them up. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - Wombat - 04-19-2011 Way to go there my friend!! It's very pleasing to see you press on with this again, not that you haven't been but when you see another section coming together like that it really does standout.Thats looking pretty good bud, wish i was still with ya sorta on this build and at the stage you are there with yours but as you know things have changed there. Still,it's good seeing you're kicking into gear again and once you get that head done well,it's all smooth sailing from there, right? Keep at it mate!! RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-19-2011 Thanks mate. All good. I had to build this 5 times today to get right. So you won't miss that. Lol RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - Wombat - 04-19-2011 You are probably right there. But it makes it even more satisfying i guess after the extra work you put in,right? All that matters is in the end you'll have a build to be very proud of there!! RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - darkimmitator - 04-21-2011 (04-19-2011, 12:27 PM)omes72 Wrote: Ahh mate thanks. It was actually your post at the top of the page that snapped me back into gear Ahhhh Jase my man ,you don't know how much that would be appreciated mate !!!!! Especially after I have lost about three quarters of my battlestar references due to corrupted files due to computer viruses . The new neck section updates look great , keep them updates coming. It's a cryin shame about Phils stoppage in his battlestar build . A huge loss of inspiration and energy his build brought to this section of this great site . I will truly miss his updates . SO it's all up to you now to keep me inspired with build updates !!! No pressure though !!! LOL Sending you a p.m. and thanks for the reference offer mate ,like I said before ,,YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE IT !!!!! Cheers ![]() ![]()
RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - LastBattlestar - 04-21-2011 That looks sharp, Jase, nice work. Remember, assymmetry = character! ![]() Don't worry Darkman, Phil ain't out of the loop yet. You're gonna be blown away....that's all I can say.... Have a great Easter guys! Mike RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - darkimmitator - 04-22-2011 (04-21-2011, 10:29 AM)LastBattlestar Wrote: That looks sharp, Jase, nice work. Remember, assymmetry = character! thanks Mike, and that is definately some hopefully news about Phil's project .The austrailian trio is the bases for inspiration on my build . definition of ausie trio: ( Mike ,Jase and Phil ) Jase ,I agree with Mike . assymetry definately = character !!! RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-25-2011 No worries mate. I will share whatever i come up with that doesn't infringe on our agreements with Charles. In saying that I habe come up with some new dimensions on some areas i believe to be more accurate than some areas of Charles's plans. All my dimensions are now from using scaled pictures of sub sections. The latest i have woked on are the arms where i have found significant variation in dimensions. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - darkimmitator - 04-25-2011 Lookin forward to them arm updates . Were the neck dimensions Ok ? i am about to start the waist, body and neck all in one fell swoop !!!! RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-25-2011 Check your PM's Ken. I will post what i got from the pictures i have resized. You can cross reference to Charles's plans & follow whichever path. Charles has openly acknowledged his plans aren't 100% in comparrison to the revised work done for Custom Replicas. They are the most accurate plans available to us though &just need attention to details before cutting. The plans won't be updated because the updated work would be covered by agreements with Custom Replicas so we need to do that on our own. Us that can anyway. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-25-2011 I have become quite proficient in scaling reference images to obtain dimensions on builds & now am using this skill to rewrite what we know & don't know on some of the studio models I will build. If I had only had this skill earlier things would be much more progressed though am truly just thankful I have developed the technique to make quite accurate dimensions of studio model sub sections. Ive been working on the arm sections & have revised measurements to what I believe are as accurate as anyone can get that hasn't put ruler to the actual studio model. Pictures show my first forearm mockup made from independant arn frames & charles's arm plate measurements( have used other sources for arm frames). What I have discovered is that the forearm & aftarms are slightly different in widths. The middle is obviously wider than the fore & aft arms. The measurements I have are what I have worked on which are different to what Charles has on his plans. Because these dimesions are from my work I can share them. It is for those that attempt to build this model that need to make the decision of which path they wish to use. I just give what I have learnt through using the techniques I have developed to help myself try to build as accurate a replica as possible. In no way do I wish to demean or diminish what Charles Adams has contributed with his plans but only to enhance what he would inevitabley not be able to do because of contractual agreements I assume/expect would be in place with Custom Replicas. Take them or leave them. I am reviseing all subsections with the techniquie of resizing actual studio model images for all to use,
RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - dbhs - 04-26-2011 Awesome work, Jase. This open and collaborative approach is just what this hobby needs. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - Wombat - 04-26-2011 ^ Things may never be the same actually.Hang on the world is still here!! LOL I'm actually really impressed seeing how you are working all this out.First with the body, then the neck and now these arm's.It looks to me to be a good way of checking if what we had been working with is correct or not.By using the pictures and scaling them to fit actually kit parts has to have things very close.Nice work there Mate!! RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-26-2011 Thanks fellas. Its definately helping to get pretty accurate dimensions which has given me confidence to progress. Im not so worried about having to come back & rebuild. It will help with my parts placements aswell. Really has taken alot of stress out of this project & made it fun again. As it should be. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-26-2011 Moving along Ive worked on the 2 middle arms this afternoon. Its looking like I may need to do some extreme alterations to the forward & aft arms ![]() So I thought Id work on the middle ones until I get my grinder ![]() Hmmm yeah well these things happen..... Comin together now & Im stoked aswell as relieved.
RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - LastBattlestar - 04-26-2011 Nice going Jase, she's really taking shape now! The lines of the ship look so cool with the arms on. I've always thought that the different centre arm looks fantastic. It would be interesting to see all 6 arms the same. Do you have a mockup or spare to throw on there for giggles? Mike RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-26-2011 Thanks Mike. Heres the arms mocked up. I still have to adjust the armature. Shouldn't be too bad ![]() Really coming to life now. Like a frekn Frankestein ![]() I like the last picture of the portside. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - dbhs - 04-27-2011 Thats really col jase. Must be fun to actually see it taking shape and in full size right there in front of you. It does kind of look like a body lying there. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-27-2011 Thanks Doug I appreciate your feedback. I woke up this morning & had a look at what i did last night. Its just so rewarding to see the effort come to life. The fact Im actually building this blows me away. Cant wait to have her all ready to start detiling. Jason, You have come a long way on your Battlestar and it is looking sweet! You are getting the old girl built pretty fast. It is true that the forward arms are different than the rear arms and this is because the landing bays are canted in on the original. this canting appears to be less than half as deep on the starboard side as it is on the port side so I don't think it was intentional. I had my 3d mock up with canted bays for a year or so then they got to be too much trouble so I made them parallel again. Also the whole ship from bow to stern is bent like a banana to starboard slightly. Remember that any project as big as this involves compromises, when you fit parts to the arms you are going to have to make adjustments to the fit no matter what as all 4 main arms on the original were slightly different sizes and shapes. Jason as you can see in the picture below the landing bays were anything but straight so the landing bay arms on your replica can be whatever you need them to be all the same or front shorter than rear and it is all good because if you build it like the original people will laugh at your work. ![]() Richard RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-27-2011 Hey Richard thanks mate. I love that picture. Can you send me a copy? Don't have that... She is coming together quite well. I am having fun & it looks like the crews getting back on deck. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - darkimmitator - 04-27-2011 wow Jase ,you are reallyprogressing on your build .She is looking bloody fantastic !!!!! truly impressive mate !!!!! RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - dbhs - 04-27-2011 I like the bottom one......SNOW-PLOW !! RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - Wombat - 04-27-2011 Excellent progress up there, you are just slaying this monster now!! That is very impressive mate, and i think waking up and seeing that is more than reason to be very proud of where you are with it.You are nailing this like you've got a pneumatic nail gun!! LOL I don't know but at this rate you'll be detailing this baby in the not to distant future. So whats next, head or bay's? RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - Richard_2001 - 04-28-2011 (04-27-2011, 07:44 AM)omes72 Wrote: Hey Richard thanks mate. I love that picture. Can you send me a copy? Don't have that... Jason, I will have to dig through the archives for the .png version it will take a couple days but I will get you the full sized version no problems. Richard RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 04-28-2011 Thanks Richard. I appreciate it. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 05-09-2011 Finally got some time back in the shop. Decided it was time to trim back the meat on the arms to fit the skins properly. The arms were a little off not allowing the skins to sit flat so no choice but to get the grinder out. I strongly recomend not detailing builds until the structure has been built.... When you have to do excessive alterations like this detail can be damaged or lost. Luckilly nothing went wrong here but the angles & accessibility made it very difficult to make the adjustments cleanly Lucky no one will ever see under the arm skins
RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 05-09-2011 Since that part is out of the way it was time to square up the arm covers. The arm lengths are straight pieces & the arms point in. When the top skin is placed on it pushes the bottoms inwards to compensate for the angle. You can see that when placed against the hull the bottoms point in. To fix this I cut some wedges 3mm thinner each side to push the bottoms out to the required diameter. This then pushes the bottoms outwards compensating for the corrected angle against the straight pathe. I will just clamp this to push in. The part with the spacer wedged in brings the piece back in to alignment
RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - ringa - 05-09-2011 She's looking FANTASTIC, Jase! RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - darkimmitator - 05-10-2011 Scary pic seeing a man taking a grinder to a studio scale battlestar !!!!!! Nice mods Jase .More progress please !!!!!! RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 05-10-2011 Yeah it wasn't fun. I will now move onto the....... Head. RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - LastBattlestar - 05-10-2011 Have fun with that. It's not that bad. I think the engine ports and the bay cross arms were a lot harder than the head. No doubt about it. Mike RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - JAWS - 09-21-2011 So I finally got the last of my acrylics cut for this build. I finally have the head & arms ready to assemble. Am soooo stoked on this. Should have done this ages ago. Im really looking forward to getting these sections built up & attatched. There will be alot more reworking but with the new techniques Ive learnt & the good ol fashion help around here am more than confident of building something that will "Look the part", as me old mate would say. Im really excited now.
RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - Richard_2001 - 09-21-2011 Jason, Looking good there! Lots of fun to be had for sure, I am sure it will look great when you get it all together ![]() Richard RE: Jases Battlestar Galactica - Wombat - 09-21-2011 Cool, someones got that Battlestar bug again!! LOL Damn good to see, Jase and don't worry none. It's gonna all look very much the part as we can see from what you've already built up there. You're on the home straight now with the assembly and you've done an amazing job with your re calaculations on areas. That idea really does seem to be a pretty good way to go about checking on things. I'm glad one of us is seeing this through and i bet you'll be pretty bloody stoked once it has that head in place along with a couple of bays. Now, of ya go and ENJOY!
